With its historical and cultural values, Bergama is the 999th in the world, the 13th in Turkey and the first UNESCO World Heritage city of İzmir. The name Pergamon comes from the ancient name of Pergamon. In addition to being a great city with its magnificent monuments and the center of the kingdom with the same name in the first age, it was an important strategic location in the Middle Ages, the second capital of Karesioğulları and finally one of the important centers of the Ottoman Empire.

The district is located in the northwest of the Aegean Region, connected to İzmir Province, between 37.07 north latitude and 27.12 east longitude. It is surrounded by Soma and Kınık in the east, Burhaniye and İvrindi in the north, Ayvalık and Dikili in the west and Aliağa in the south. To the southwest is the Aegean Sea coast. It is a town with a coastline at a distance of 107 km from the city center of Izmir.

The city was established in the Bakırçay basin, surrounded by mountain ranges, such as Madra Mountain in the north (highest point-Geyikli: 1051 meters), Yunt Mountain in the south (Maya Hill, the highest point: 1344 meters). The length of the Bakırçay plain is 45 km, and its width varies between 15 and 20 km in places. The altitude of the district center is 68 meters and the altitude of the Acropolis is 331 meters.
Dividing the plain it gives its name into two, Bakırçay is 30 km from Balıkesir. It originates from the Davullu mountains in the south. It is fed by the Glenbe, Aksu, Yağcılı, Menteşe, İlya, Karadere, Kırkgeçit, Gümüş, Kestel, Bergama, Sarıırmak, and border streams, which join from the Madra and Yunt mountains. It is 120 km long and its regime is irregular.

The Mediterranean climate is dominant in Bergama, where summers are hot and dry, and winters are warm and rainy. The temperature difference between day and night is between 15-20 degrees. The winds blow from the north in the summer and winter, the north east, the north west. Lodos and westerly winds bring rain. Annual precipitation is around 600 mm3.
Pergamon; It is the largest district of İzmir in terms of area, with an area of 1,573 km² and 30 districts. According to TURKSTAT 2018 data, the total population of the district is 103,185. It is the district with the 13th population density among the 30 districts of İzmir.
The most important income sources of Bergama for many years are agriculture and animal husbandry. The agricultural sector has not been able to provide diversity within itself, except for certain products. Cotton, tobacco, tomatoes, olives, corn and wheat can be counted as the most important agricultural products that the people earn their livelihood. The region’s soil and land structure are open to new investors in terms of diversification.

Bergama region has a rich potential in terms of mining sector. The mineral deposits under operation are granite, marble, gold, perlite and stone quarries. The region is also rich in natural thermal springs and water resources.
